Paul Ashby's Cake Run

Scotney Castle

Sunday 14th April ‘13

Paul Ashby’s Cake Run

Meeting for breakfast / Coffee at the 7 Diner TN14 7AA

From 10am, Run departs at 11am for afternoon tea and cakes at

Scotney Castle an English country house with formal gardens south-east of Lamberhurst in the valley of the River Bewl in Kent. It belongs to the National Trust. The gardens, which are a celebrated example of the picturesque style, are open to the public. The central feature is the ruins of a medieval, moated manor house, Scotney Old Castle, which is on an island on a small lake. The lake is surrounded by sloping, wooded gardens with fine collections of rhododendrons, azaleas and kalmia for spring colour, summer wisteria and roses, and spectacular autumn colour. At the top of the garden stands a house which was built to replace the Old Castle between 1835 and 1843. This is known as Scotney New Castle, or simply Scotney Castle, and was designed by Anthony Salvin. It is an early, and unusually restrained, example of Tudor Revival architectural style in 19th century Britain. Following the death of the resident, Elizabeth Hussey, in 2006, this house was opened to the public for the first time on June 6, 2007.

This will be a leisurely run taking in some of Kent’s fine county roads and lanes arriving at Scotney Castle at around 1.30pm approx.

Belper is a small, attractive market town, situated in the Derwent Valley, 8 miles north of Derby. The river Derwent runs along the western edge of the town. Belper's past industrial History includes nail manufacture when the area was part of the Royal Forest in Derbyshire. In 1740, the population of Belper was around 500. By the 1830's it had risen to around 8,000. Its rapid growth and development is due in large part to the building of water powered cotton mills by Jedediah Strutt and his family.

Quex Park 5 May

Welcome to one of the UK's most fascinating visitor attractions, the home of the

Powell-Cotton Museum, set in the beautiful Quex Park, near Margate in South East Kent.

There has been a house at Quex Park, in Kent since the early 1400s, home to several different families over the centuries. It has been called 'Quex' since its ownership in the 1500s by the Quekes family, who prospered from the extensive wool industry in Kent. Major Powell-Cotton's ancestor, John Powell (1721-1783), bought the house and adjacent farm as an investment in 1777. His nephew, John Powell Powell (1769-1849) demolished the mansion, replacing it with an elegant Regency home

The Museum at Quex Park in Kent had its origins in a pavilion built in the garden in 1896 to house the growing collection of trophies gathered by the young Percy Powell-Cotton on a series of amazing trips to the wildest areas of northern India and Tibet.

Although a hunter and collector all his life, from the beginning Percy was also interested in the people of the countries he traveled in and he brought back examples of a wide range of material that illustrates their lives and cultures.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham 9th June 2013

Chatham is the world's most complete example of a Historic Dockyard from the age of sail a time when Dockyards were the industrial centers of Europe.

HMS Victory - Nelson’s flagship at Trafalgar was built at Chatham.

Historically, the ship took over six years to build, during this time the wood from over 6,000 trees was used of which 90% was oak. She was launched in 1765 at Chatham Dockyard and was commissioned in 1778. In terms of today's value, the estimated building cost of Victory would be a staggering fifty million pounds-at the time she was built costs amounted to £63,175.00.

Nord - Pas-de-Calais Is a region of France bordered on the north by the English Channel and the North Sea, on the northeast by Belgium, and on the south by Picardy. In historic terms, this region covers most of what was once the French part of Flanders, and the old province of Artois.

It is a region that has plenty to offer: the "Cote d'Opale", or Opal Coast, is an attractive west-facing coast with chalk cliffs, elegant resorts, and many sandy beaches; inland there are many areas of unspoilt countryside, particularly in the Pas de Calais. The area has many fascinating towns and cities.

Battle of the Atlantic

The battle Britain could not afford to lose

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest campaign of World War II. It began on the first day of the war and continued until the German surrender in 1945. Winston Churchill said the campaign to keep the convoy routes open was ‘the dominating factor all through the war. Never for one moment could we forget that everything happening elsewhere, on land, at sea or in the air, depended on its outcome…’ The battle to control the shipping lanes across the Atlantic involved thousands of ships and cost the lives of more than 30,000 Merchant Navy seamen. Its loss would, in all probability, have meant defeat in the war.

For Britain and Germany, it was the battle that neither side could afford to lose.
